Self-reflection and evaluation:
Please answer each question using complete sentences to justify your responses, include as much detail and provide examples where possible.
Planning and Reflection:
• Explain how closely your synopsis and justification related to the final trailer. My synopsis was roughly similar to my final piece as I kept certain aspects the same, and changed others to best fit the trailer.
• Did you make use of the list of key shots and genre elements to assemble your trailer? Explain how. I did use the shot list to compose the trailer and to be able to place the most effective shots in the right places. I also used the shot list, to identify certain shots and sounds e.g, dialogue or phrases, to bring more life, and realism to trailer.
• List some steps that you could have implemented to improve the planning stage of this task. I would have maybe made a physical story board, or rough drafts in the planning stages to be able to play around with multiple shots and be sure of what I want in the trailer, thus I would have a precise and complete plan so i could sit down and know what task should be done instead of improvising at times.
• Discuss how effectively you used your blog, to reflect on both the planning and editing stages. I used my blog to reflect upon multiple plans and shot-lists and to keep track on my progress and ideas. My work on my blog reflects my progression from an idea to an actual trailer.
Production and time-management
• Did the editing require more or less time than you thought? The editing most definitely required more time than i was expecting as i was used to using iMovie, which is very basic in comparison, and with the use of Final Cut i was able to control all aspects of my trailer.
• Which aspect of editing did you find most challenging? Personally, i found editing on the beat was quite difficult because you really have to put a-lot of time and effort into it and if one shot if off then the whole trailer may look out of place.
• How effectively did you manage your Final cut project? (consider your use of libraries, events, projects and duplicates). Very well because from the very beginning i had my library and event sorted and placed on my USB and i had two seperate copies so i would risk loosing anything.
• How effectively did you use technology to manage your task, and what would you change for next project? (Consider correct USB or storage device, backups, laptop borrowing etc.) From the very beginning i had the correct USB, and i was able to borrow a laptop to complete my project over the long weekend.
• Did you encounter any problems or difficulties during production? (Difficulties may include; technical, time-management, loss of data/media etc.) How did this effect your project? I believe i did not use my time effectively in class and did most of my production outside of class and a portion of my trailer towards the end of the given time, which made me quite stressed towards the end but i was able to complete it to the best of my abilities, and i was content with how it turned out.
Looking back on your editing task this term, respond to the following:
• Would like to change or improve any aspects of your film (storyline, shots, editing etc.)? I would like to touch up my dialogue as it did sound a little rough and not a smooth transition with the background music.
• After viewing the other films made by your classmates, were there any particular editing techniques which you found inspiring? Explain why. I really like how Laura’s sound and trailer linked so well as there was a section with very fast, sudden beat and she edited the shots so they would change exactly on the beat, and there was also a very prominent build up with both the pace of music and shots.
As this task focused on emphasising a specific genre, explain:
Which specific trailer production techniques you implemented to develop/enhance your narrative? (You should refer to the techniques listed on the task sheet). I was able to use a gradual build, where at the beginning of my horror trailer it began to build tension, then the tension kept building until intense music began to play and it turned from a slow paced to a fast paced and intense horror trailer.
• Please explain which aspect you chose to focus on for this task and whether you were successful in making improvements. I would hope to improve my editing skills, as this project being my first time using Final Cut I would like to improve my fluency and skills, thus to make it easier to edit in the future and I hope to uncover new techniques.
